In a significant development, Plan International Pilipinas, with funding from the German Federal Foreign Office, has initiated the “Strengthening Structures for Anticipatory Humanitarian Action” project.
Running from August 2023 to July 2026, the project focuses on empowering vulnerable communities in Eastern Samar and Maguindanao del Norte to reshape disaster preparedness and management with a focus on gender equality and inclusivity.
Ms. Ana Maria Locsin, Executive Director of Plan International Pilipinas, emphasized the transformative nature of the project, incorporating gender-responsive and socially inclusive strategies into disaster management. Recognizing the disproportionate impact on women and children during crises, especially girls, the initiative addresses specific challenges faced by these communities, such as security issues, limited health access, and struggles for girls and young women.
Locsin stated, “We are empowering communities to anticipate and reduce disaster risks. Through a collaborative strategy involving government, communities, media, and international partners, we’re establishing a resilient network for lasting impact.”
The commitment extends to supporting children, adolescents, and parents facing trauma, psychosocial conditions, psychological distress, and mental health challenges, providing inclusive and steadfast support for those encountering profound difficulties.
The launch event saw the participation of project partners from the Bangsamoro region, including the Maguindanao del Norte provincial government, local disaster risk reduction offices, and various ministries.
Notable commitments came from the Ministry of Basic Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE), highlighting the crucial role in ensuring inclusive disaster preparedness and management. The MBHTE aims to adapt educational strategies to diverse needs, creating a resilient, inclusive, and responsive educational system for disaster preparedness management.
The collaboration involves key entities such as OND HESED Foundation, UN OCHA, and UN Food and Agriculture Organization, reinforcing the commitment to anticipatory action through early forecasting in communities.
